YouTuber calls me out for content I made over a year ago. Here’s my response.

Sometimes you can't read the label when you're inside the bottle. Thankfully, we have Nate from @Channel Makers who caught me by surprise and called me out in one of his recent videos.

What's this about? Starting March 15th, 2020, I started live streaming here on the channel, and I ended up streaming for 365 days straight. Unfortunately, that MAY have not been the right decision. Let's watch Nate's thoughts, and my response.

Saw that and, without being over dramatic, The Income Stream was life changing; and I can’t be the only one. Massive ideas were learned, internalized and implemented. Went from having some real challenges to rebuilding a medical device and systems company that’s on the tip of the spear serving a lot of people in remarkably meaningful ways. My channel isn’t a main focus, but is starting to become a thing. My goal with that was to make it to The Ellen Show, but maybe there’ll be some other pivot. One word – SwitchPod!!!

Every decision one makes will have both good & bad results.

Despite this, you stuck to your guns and cleared that year of streams despite the negative channel analytical parameters mention. More than that though, the experience has granted you wisdom in how to better things on the podcast front.

    Kudos to you!

It all depends on what your goals are. You weren’t doing that to grow your audience. You were serving your current audience and anyone new who needed support if they lost their job. I think you blew it out of the park with that goal.

Oh I don’t regret it at all! It was the best year ever it just, based on the spectrum of “YouTube growth strategies”, was not the best. But growth isn’t always the goal.

THAT WAS A VERY GOOD 1 YEAR PAT, you know me and I’m a loyal fan.. though I can’t afford to buy your courses and stuff LOL still your live streams was like free stuff from your paid courses LOL
    love ya for life

    • Pat Flynn January 21, 2022 at 4:17 pm #

It was a GREAT year! Thank you for being a part of it!

  5. Pat Flynn January 21, 2022 at 4:07 pm #

To be clear, I do NOT regret what I did AT ALL. It was actually one of the best things for what I felt was most needed at the time, for my community, and for myself. Would have I approached it a bit different…sure…but growth during that time on YouTube was not the primary goal. Nate is right with regards to how this effected my growth on YouTube, but I stand firm with, other than perhaps separating The Income Stream into a new channel, that I made the right decisions. I look forward to doing it again with all that in mind. To the Income Stream Community, thank you so much for that incredible year – it was life changing for me!

This is why I believe your content is truly some of the most valuable information you can find in any format. My verbal reaction when watching his video was almost exactly the same. “YouTube” is not Pat’s audience!

    • Key Lloyd January 21, 2022 at 4:55 pm #

P.S. I appreciate both you and Nate for being morally ethical businessmen and creators.

Keep up the great work Pat! Thank you

Pat, I am seriously holding back my emotions of overwhelm right now as I watch this video. I get the whole algorithm/branding thing … I really do. BUT (however LOL) … I commend YOU for doing what you felt was needed during an unprecedented time. Okay, now the tears are coming … because you provided what so many of us needed during a time of great uncertainty. Many of us pivoted from working in an office to working from home … WHILE also tending to our wee virtual learners who were at home all day. And for me, it was especially challenging because my son was virtual AND nonverbal at age 10. I truly hope that what you chose to do during that time didn’t hurt you financially (although I don’t believe you would have done 365 days straight if that were the case).

I am so very proud of you for stepping out and doing something completely different while deeply getting to know your existing community as well as the people who were just discovering you.

I mean this from the bottom of my heart when I say … the world needs more people like YOU!!! I hope you won’t stop being the example for the HUMAN component of live streaming, podcasting, blogging, social audio, etc. I REALLY REALLY miss that daily routine of seeing you every day and greeting our friends in the chat. I miss hearing your voice every day because yours is a voice of integrity. Your content wasn’t AS important to me as your caring nature and the fact that you showed up to help people grow and move forward in achieving their dreams. I am really hoping for an INCOME STREAM REUNION because I truly miss being part of that daily community you built. It really was something SUPER SPECIAL!!!!

And in case the point was lost in ALL that I wrote above, I will highlight it here … NEVER STOP being true to yourself and your community when your intuition tells you there is something you need to place emphasis on in your life and in your business. We love you, Pat!!!!

    With love and GREAT respect,
    April Roga (AKA April 2.0)

I love you April! And I will be coming back, likely bi-weekly, again soon! Can’t wait to hang again!

@Pat Flynn Love you right back!!!! And I can’t wait to see you LIVE again!!! More people need to be aware of Pat Flynn! And when I get my podcast up and going where we are going to spotlight Clubhouse creators, I would definitely love to have you on as a guest because YOU are the reason I found and fell in love with that platform that has pushed me so much closer to reaching my dream/vision. #NoPressure 😉

I love this. Such a positive reaction where most people defend themselves in a poor way. I love both channels btw.

    • Pat Flynn January 21, 2022 at 4:55 pm #

      Thank you for that!

  9. Channel Makers January 21, 2022 at 4:59 pm #

Pat! What a great video! It’s great to hear your side of this. Love that you pointed out how the 365 day podcasting created a group of people who LOVED what you did – that’s something I didn’t account for in my review. I’ve been listening to your stuff for years, so I’m honored to have you mention me and respond!

So cool you’re starting a separate channel for the podcasts – I just subscribed!

    • Pat Flynn January 21, 2022 at 5:31 pm #

Nate! Thank you so much for the comment, and congrats on what will be a 100k sub channel very soon! I’ve bunged watched your content, it’s great, and I can’t wait for more learnings from you!

Hope to connect soon my friend! Thank you again! This was a perfect discussion to have here that you kicked off!

Nate, I love how you were so kind in how you approached your perception of Pat’s 365 days of The Income Stream. And I really love that this moment seems to have brought you and Pat together in a special way. Maybe we are “smelling” a possible collaboration in your collective futures???? <> 😉

I remember you showing up daily, Pat.
It was much needed back then, you did a wonderful thing for a community, always there, every day.
We needed constants and predictability more than ever. Thank you.

First, I really appreciate the grace and humility you took when someone randomly ‘audited’ your channel. Though, I wonder about the view/approach of the criticism. I think sometimes the long-term value of a video, or change in content presentation, can surpass that of the vanity metrics of view counts and new subscribers. I imagine the view duration for a good amount of your viewers of the live-streams was rather good if not impressive. I also think the amount of trust you created with the live-streams far outweighs the value of some more subs or view counts. Although, I suppose that all depends on how an individual is structuring their business – if you only rely on ad revenue than it would be a big issue to not have as many views. On a personal note, one of the first videos I saw of yours was a live-stream. I enjoyed it so much I went back and started going through your catalogue of live-streams. The live-streams made me a sub then lead me to be a sub of your podcasts. I think podcasts and YouTube will have an interesting relationship this year. I do think the idea of making a separate channel is good and I have been enjoying the snippets of the SPI podcast you started sharing on the SPI YT channel. Thanks so much for sharing your experience of being “called out” and your response.

Awesome to hear the mindset for your year of podcasts on YouTube and great response to the conversation around your content. Helpful insights. Thanks – Tony

There are no YT analytics that can measure the value of the community experienced during that first year of quarantine. I think if you measured what that daily show did for the mental health and well-being of those of us who were regulars – you’d be earning the SEL [social-emotional learning] Black-Belt/Silver-Play/EGOT [emmy-grammy-oscar-tony] The learning never stops – thanks for this self-reflective video! The community may need another check in soon!
