Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (3rd Gen) Review – Audio Interface for XLR Mic (Podcasting Gear)

The Scarlett 2i2 from Focusrite – I've been using the 2nd generation version for years, and now the 3rd gen version is even better! If you're trying to figure out how to connect your XLR microphone to your computer or laptop, then this is the tool for you. With audio interface controls and the ability to connect up to two mics (and USB-C connection directly to your computer), it's super simple and easy to work with.

In this video, I get some assistance from Mike Russell from MusicRadioCreative.com as we dive into the 2i2 and just how easy it is to setup, and even how to use both channels to record into separate tracks (demonstrated on Adobe Audition). I'm using my podcasting mic, the Heil PR-40 here in this video, although any XLR compatible mic will work. This does NOT have a connection for a USB microphone, only XLR.

Big thanks to Focusrite for upgrading my 2i2 2nd gen to this newer version. They supplied one to me for free, however that was without any expectation of a review. Just wanted to be up front with that.

Here’s a question: I do a lot of vocal recording for music and I need a hub that can play back the music and I can hear my voice live Through the headphones does this device to do that?

Yes, plug in headphones into the box and you can monitor your voice, live as you record (or even before you record).

I could really get used to the “AIR” setting at 2:22. A great, clear and crispy sound all without tweaking EQ curves like crazy. Thanks Pat for having me on your channel to check out this solid piece of kit!

I got one of these recently and absolutely love it. It works great with my iPhone as well.

A CloudLifter or Fethead would provide almost no benefit with the 3rd gen 2i2 as it has an EIN or Equivalent Input Noise of -128 dB (A Weighted) which at most means a CloudLifter will reduce the noise floor by 2 dB. The Max Gain of the 2i2 3rd gen is 56 dB which should drive most mics, even the historically low sensitivity mics if streaming live. The real issue is the EIN.
