Watch time is the key metric to growth on YouTube – most people know this. Unfortunately, keeping people on your videos is a LOT harder than it seems. With distractions galore, and short attention spans, we need to work harder to keep people watching.

These are not illegal hacks or anything like that, so if you're looking for a quick and easy way to immediately get tens of thousands of views – I'm sorry – you're going to have to look elsewhere. Success comes from hard work and learning as you go, and I'm hoping to speed up the learning curve for you and help you learn what actually keeps real people sticking around your videos and live streams. Pat – could you tell us about the layout of the things on your desk at 0:48? It’s such an eye-opener to see the gear you use and how each piece interacts. thanks

@Pat Flynn out of interest, if I wanted to invite you on my podcast (about building online audiences / getting stuff made) what’s the best way? Had over half a million downloads to date. 🙂

Here’s the RECAP: https://youtu.be/s5NSbfSbi2g?t=3103 51:41 – goes pretty fast so here’s the list (I’ll be honest, just as much for my reference as yours):
    1) Title and Thumbnail 3:41
    2) Movement 6:24
    3) Hook 8:54 (don’t forget “so that…”)
    4) Focus on them 13:20
    5) Use the word “YOU” instead of “everyone” 15:33 (a huge one for me as I’m in the wrong habit)
    6) More STORY (TIME ) 18:39
    7) Pace and Dynamics 26:33 (vary your voice!)
    8) Open Loops 29:27 (don’t forget to close them so you aren’t clickbaity)
    9) Giveaways 35:52
    10) Pattern Interrupts 37:54
    11) Recap! 40:27

Thanks again Pat for answering my question 57:49 as well!
What I didn’t say was that we also intend to re-purpose our talk show (Thrive-IT #THRIVEcast) for a podcast. The idea I got after this is that we can do all that and then have specific segments for things like giveaways each week that are only for YouTube!

I’d love to get in the head of people that are giving this a thumbs down as to what they were expecting, but… whatever. This is GOLD!

This is a great list. I’m going to add one each week on my videos/live stream until I’ve done them all. Thanks for the road map. #teamreplay
