Bestseller Lists & What Actually Matters When Writing a Book

Most authors aspire to make "one of those bestseller lists" – the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, or USA Today. But what happens if you don't? Is the book a complete failure?

My previous book, Will It Fly, became a Wall Street Journal Bestseller after the first week, so I had expected Superfans, my new book launched 3 years after Will It Fly, to do just as well, if not, better.

In this video, I explore what it means to write a bestselling book, and what happens when things don't go according to plan – and the true purpose and reason why we should be writing books.

A big thank you to everyone who helped support Superfans! It continues to spread in all kinds of surprising ways (it was recently featured on the homepage of ProductHunt, for example!) and I'm so thankful for all the amazing comments and reviews that are coming in.

If you have yet to get the book, you can grab it here on Amazon (affiliate link):

Remember that there are human beings on the other end of your books, your products, and your platforms – and it's for them that you create, and the better you can serve them, the more likely your creation is to soar. Cheers, thanks again for the support, and #TeamFlynnfortheWin!

Ha! So glad I watched until the end – those bloopers made me feel better because you did that book spin SOOOOO well so it’s good to see that wasn’t the first take. Congrats on a great book launch …and with that list you don’t really know what did or did not happen to not make it.

@Pat Flynn Hey Pat,thanks for all that you do.
You have inspired me to take action in life.
I am working in a book.I had an idea and your video on chunking ideas on post it notes was a great help.
Am yet to complete the rough draft.
I’m afraid that I’d be sued if I quote something written by an another writer.
How can I safely so it without facing dire consequences?
How do I give credit to them in a legit manner?
Do I have to get a written approval or shoot a mail to them.
      Thanks Pat.

I just ordered your book and can’t wait to for it to arrive!

I’m a nurse living with a HUGE Alzheimer’s legacy in my family. Right now my mom is in the end stages of this disease. Even though I’m a nurse… which was my calling, I’ve always been an entrepreneur at heart. I’ve had many side business that have been great ideas, and some even got to the point of seeing some success. They never really became anything, and then I see other since my efforts, start and succeed with the same idea. My question always has been – I have these great ideas, but why can’t I make them work and others do.

I’m hoping your book will shed some light on what’s going on with me. Also, I now have pinpointed my next endeavour, a passion project to help educate others. I want to teach about what I have learned and what I’m doing to make sure the Alzheimer’s gene isn’t activated in me. I want to educate others in the same situation as I am that there is hope and share the increasing amounts of evidenced-based research on this subject. I don’t know yet how I will make a business out of it… but, that is my plan. Looking forward to reading your book!
